Welcome to the State Farm family! We’re excited to help you take full advantage of your State Farm benefits. Be sure to enroll soon, as your enrollment period is limited.
Timing matters
When your coverage begins depends on your hire date and when you complete your enrollment.
- If your hire date is the first calendar day of the month, your coverage is effective that day.
- If you’re hired after the first calendar day of the month, your coverage is effective on the first calendar day of the following month.
If you do not make an enrollment selection within the first 60 days of your hire date, you will automatically waive access to your benefits, including medical coverage, until the next annual enrollment period or until you experience a qualifying life event.
Your first week
You’re automatically enrolled in the following benefits:
- 401(k) Savings Plan
- Unless you opt out or elect a different contribution rate within your first 30 days, you’ll be automatically enrolled at a pretax rate of 4% of eligible biweekly pay, with an automatic increase of 1% each year, up to a maximum of 15%.
- You can start or change your contributions at any time.
- Within days of State Farm sending your information to Vanguard, you will receive a welcome letter in the mail that includes a link to set up your Vanguard account and information about managing your contributions.
- Employee Assistance Program
- Short-term disability insurance (Note: You must complete six months of employment before you are eligible to use this benefit.)
Within 60 days
Enroll for these benefits:
- Medical coverage (prescription drug coverage is automatically included with medical coverage)
- Dental coverage
- Vision coverage
- Health Savings Account (available only if you enroll in the QHDHP administered by BCBSIL)
- Health Care Flexible Spending Account
- Dependent Care Flexible Spending Account
- Life and AD&D insurance
- Voluntary AD&D insurance
- Long-term disability insurance
Note: New hires in Hawaii are automatically enrolled in Kaiser HMO member-only coverage. To opt out of medical coverage, you need to complete and submit the HC-4 waiver form.
Want help understanding your benefits?
We offer optional webinars that explain medical and financial benefits. While these sessions don’t cover every benefit that State Farm offers, they provide a solid starting point and can help you with enrollment decisions.

If you don’t enroll
If you do not elect your benefits during your first 60 days, you will have no health coverage, unless you are in Hawaii. You will need to wait until the next annual benefits enrollment to enroll yourself and your eligible dependents in health plans—unless you experience a qualifying life event during the year.
A few words about your coverage
After you complete your enrollment, it can take up to two weeks for your record to be updated in the systems of the insurance carriers (BCBSIL, Kaiser, Aetna, Cigna, VSP, etc.) and for each carrier to provide ID cards. You won’t get a physical ID card for your dental coverage (Cigna) or vision coverage (VSP). Just share your information with your provider at the time of service.
Once your coverage is active, you can create an account online or through the carrier’s mobile app.
If you need to access medical care or prescriptions before you receive your insurance carrier ID cards, you’ll need to pay out of pocket and then submit a claim for reimbursement—a good reason to make sure you complete your enrollment as soon as possible!
