Changing Your Benefits

Isn’t it nice to know that when major life changes happen, you can update your State Farm benefits to fit your new situation? Just be sure you take action within 60 days of the event.

Qualifying life events

Outside of annual benefits enrollment, the only time you can make changes to your State Farm benefits is when you experience a qualifying life event. These include changes in the following:

  • Marital status (marriage, divorce) 
  • Employment status (termination, change from full-time to part-time) or that of your spouse or dependents
  • Change of residence to outside the plan coverage area
  • Domestic partner relationship (commitment or separation)
  • Number of dependents (birth, legal adoption, guardianship, death, change in eligibility status)
  • Change in dependent care cost
  • Medicare or Medicaid eligibility
  • Requirement of a court order
  • Changes to your COBRA eligibility or that of your spouse or dependents

The benefits changes you make must be consistent with the life event, and coverage is typically effective on the date of the event or the day after loss of other coverage.

How to make changes

Within 60 days of the qualifying life event, visit the My State Farm Benefits Resource website (auto sign-on with SSO | log in).

Be prepared to provide documentation of your life event (for example, a marriage certificate, birth certificate, loss of coverage letter, etc.).

Remember to update your beneficiaries

If you're changing your benefits, you may also want to check your beneficiaries on file to make sure they're up to date. 

  • For Life and AD&D insurance and the State Farm Retirement Plan, visit the My State Farm Benefits Resource website (auto sign-on with SSO | log in). 
  • For the 401(k) Savings Plan, visit Vanguard (auto sign-on with SSO | log in).
  • For the Health Savings Account (HSA), visit Optum (auto sign-on with SSO | log in).
