Disability & Workplace Accommodations

Sometimes life can pull you off track. Our short-term disability (STD) and long-term disability (LTD) plans protect you financially when you can’t work due to your own injury or medical condition. Approved claims provide temporary, partial income replacement that helps you keep your finances in check. In addition to these financial protections, we also offer workplace accommodations to support you during recovery or special circumstances.

Short-term disability

You’re eligible for short-term disability (STD) benefits if you’re a full-time employee or a benefits-eligible part-time employee, but STD benefits don’t kick in until you’ve been with State Farm for six months.

The State Farm STD plan helps replace part of your pay if you’re unable to work due to a covered medical condition.

The STD benefits you receive depend on when you were hired and how long you’re out on leave.

If you were hired before September 24, 2016, and approved for STD: 100% of your weekly covered earnings for weeks 2–26

If you were hired on or after September 24, 2016, and approved for STD:

  • 100% of your weekly covered earnings for weeks 2–13
  • 70% of your weekly covered earning for weeks 14–26

During week one you can use life leave or paid time off (PTO); if you don’t have enough hours to cover the waiting period, it will be unpaid.

For more information, review the STD resources. For STD plan details, review the STD Policy.

Long-term disability

If you’re unable to return to work after your STD benefits end or after 180 days of total disability, and you’re enrolled in LTD coverage, your LTD benefits kick in. Coverage continues for as long as you meet the plan’s disability requirements.

You can enroll for long-term disability (LTD) insurance as a new hire or during annual benefits enrollment. Since you pay the full cost for this benefit through after-tax payroll deductions, you won’t pay taxes on any benefits you receive.

Coverage options

You can choose from two LTD plans, both administered by New York Life. What you pay for coverage depends on the option you choose. See what you’ll pay for coverage.

  • The LTD 50 Plan provides a benefit equal to 50% of your base salary, with a minimum monthly benefit of $250 and a maximum monthly benefit of $27,500.
  • The LTD 60 Plan provides a benefit equal to 60% of your base salary, with a minimum monthly benefit of $250 and a maximum monthly benefit of $32,500.
